Brodie loved his Christmas presents so much, he ate one

Updated over a month ago

Picture the holidays with your Cocker Spaniel. You might not expect them to be 100% ‘silent night’, but neither do you picture an emergency.

Brodie the 6 year-old Cocker Spaniel spent Christmas and Boxing Day very happily with family. But within the next day, his family noticed that something was really not right.

He’d become unusually quiet, showing signs of gastrointestinal upset and clear abdominal discomfort. Concerned that he could have swallowed something he shouldn’t have, his owners acted quickly. Anyone who’s lived with a curious pup knows how easy it is for dogs to get their paws (and teeth) on something harmful.

Foreign body ingestion is all too common and can be incredibly dangerous.

Brodie was swiftly triaged by a vet, and the initial concern was serious: a potential intestinal blockage. These situations can escalate fast and often require immediate diagnostics, like X-rays, and in more complex cases, surgical intervention.

And that’s exactly what happened. Brodie was taken in for X-rays, which led to emergency abdominal surgery. The vet team found and removed a blockage in his small intestine, just in time. He was then carefully monitored and hospitalised to ensure a safe recovery.

It was a frightening experience, but Brodie’s owners had peace of mind knowing they weren’t going through it alone. With their lifetime Napo insurance policy, they were able to claim over £2,000 in vet fees, something they would have never anticipated but were very thankful for during an incredibly stressful time.

Today, Brodie’s back to his happy, tail-wagging self, enjoying his favourite walks and cuddles with family, with a few extra safeguards in place to prevent any more unplanned snacking adventures.

And for the record, he’d eaten a brand new lego piece that his brother got for Christmas!
