What is a bilateral condition and will you cover it?

A “Bilateral condition” is any condition affecting, or that can affect, body parts of which your pet has two or more such as the ears, eyes, feet, knees, cruciate ligaments, shoulders and elbows. When applying the policy limit and the applicable excess, any treatment for a bilateral condition will be considered as one condition, regardless of when the treatment occurred.

We treat bilateral conditions, in the same way as all conditions, namely that we'll offer cover for bilateral conditions as long as the condition is covered in our policy, they're not pre-existing and they haven't happened in the waiting period (if applicable).

For example, if your pet had cruciate ligament surgery prior to the policy start date, and 6 months later needed cruciate ligament surgery on another leg - we would not be able to cover this, as this would be pre-existing.

However, if they had cruciate ligament surgery during your policy year and we did cover this (i.e. a claim was accepted), then we’d look to cover the other leg for cruciate ligament surgery (up to your policy limit, as long as you have remained continually insured with us) - and if the surgery happened in the same policy year we would not deduct the excess again.
