Why has my Third Party Liability cover been removed?

Updated this week

What is Third Party Liability (TPL)?

Third Party Liability is section 2 of your Napo policy. It provides cover for damages and legal costs if you or your immediate family are found liable in the event that your dog causes death, injury or property damage to another person or their property.

This cover is included as standard with your Napo policy, as long as your pet meets our eligibility criteria.

Why has my Third Party Liability cover been removed?

We're sorry if this wasn't the news you were hoping for. We know this can be confusing, so we'd like to explain why this has happened.

When we assess Third Party Liability cover, we look at behaviours that could increase the risk of an incident - even if there's no intention to cause harm. Behaviours like sudden lunging, snapping, or directed barking can make accidents more likely to happen.

At Napo we define aggression as “Any interaction by your pet which results or could result in your pet causing damage or harm to another animal or human, including but not limited to barking, growling or snapping”.

Our underwriter has set clear guidelines that we apply to all pets. If your pet's vet records show behaviours that meet our policy definition of aggression, we're unable to continue offering Third Party Liability cover.

Please note: This doesn't mean your pet has been formally classified as an aggressive dog, and we're not creating any external record. It's simply an underwriting decision based on what's documented in their clinical history.

What does this mean for my policy?

Your policy is a yearly contract. At each renewal, we can offer your policy unchanged, with amended terms, or we may not be able to offer a renewal. You can find more about this in the "Renewing and adjustments to your policy" section of your policy wording.

The good news is that removing Third Party Liability cover allows us to continue providing comprehensive vet fee cover for your pet without interruption. All other sections of your policy remain the same.

We understand that behaviour can sometimes be influenced by anxiety or fear, especially during vet visits, and we don't judge your pet for this at all. However, we need to assess cover based on how the behaviour presents rather than the emotional reasons behind it.

What can I do?

We know your pet deserves to be fully covered. While we can't offer Third Party Liability cover, some home insurance providers include liability cover as standard - so it's worth checking your policy documents to see if you're already covered.

If you have any questions about this decision, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us.
