Is my pet covered for pre-existing conditions?

We unfortunately don't cover pre-existing conditions

Updated over a month ago

When you take out a quote for a policy with us, we don't ask you to declare any pre-existing conditions, as we don't cover them, so it does not affect your quote.

We define preexisting conditions as any injuries, illnesses, or behavioural disorders for which your pet had signs or symptoms, treatment, medication, or advice in the last 24 months before the policy start date. A condition doesn’t have to be diagnosed to be considered pre-existing.

If anything happened to your pet before 24 months ago, and they haven't had treatment or signs or symptoms in the last 24 months, then we'll look to cover it!

For example, if your pet had a bout of vomiting 6 months prior to your policy start date and then another issue with their stomach happened and it was deemed not related to the previous condition - then we'd look to cover this straight away.

However, if the same condition reoccured this would be classed as pre-existing (unless it occurred 24 months after the initial condition with no further signs or symptoms, advice or treatment in-between). We refer to your vet notes to determine if a condition is linked.

To read more about bilateral conditions and what this means, see here.

There's also a short waiting period, which means that you won’t be able to claim for any accidents happening within the first 24 hours of your policy start date and you won’t be able to claim for any other conditions which happen within the first 10 days of your policy start date.

If you're switching over to Napo from another pet insurance company, you can benefit from immediate coverage without any waiting period (see here for how).

If your policy has renewed, it is worth noting that this is continuous cover, and we don’t reset the timeframe for pre-existing conditions.

All of our policies are lifetime policies which means that once we've approved a condition, we'll keep covering it for as long as you're continually insured with us (i.e. renewing your existing cover at the end of each policy year)- even for your pet's entire lifetime.

The only caveat is that, obviously, we can only cover your pet for their 'lifetime' as long as the policy terms and conditions continue to be met, e.g. you continue to pay your premiums.
